Design and Methodology
The ANIBES study includes a representative sample of the population living in Spain (excluding the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla) between 9 and 75 years old.
Specifically, the starting sample contained 2,009 people to represent a total of 37 million. The distribution by sex (50.4% men and 49.6% women) reflects the distribution of men and women in the country. The sample size for younger Spaniards (from 9-12 and 13-17 years old) was increased to correctly represent these age groups (+/- 6.9% error). The random sample plus additional participants, then, includes 2,285 participants.
The fieldwork for the ANIBES study was done over the course of three months, between September and November 2013 after two pilot studies had been carried out (June-September 2013).
Thanks to the technology used in the ANIBES study, it was possible to verify and codify the information compiled from each participant almost in real time. Once all of the information on food and drink intake was transformed into energy and nutrient information using a specific dietary assessment programme from the Spanish Nutrition Foundation, the data were processed using different statistical analyses and tools. The data were then grouped into 16 food groups, 29 subgroups and 761 ingredients for later analysis.
