Body mass index (BMI) is a good indicator of overweight but gives no information about body fat distribution. Excess abdominal fat is associated with abnormal lipid and insulin concentrations and is an indicator of metabolic syndrome risk. For this reason the measurement of waist circumference (WC) has been added to the evaluation of the Thao-Salud infantil Programme.
