Overweight and General and Abdominal Obesity in a Representative Sample of Spanish Adults: Findings from the ANIBES Study
Introduction
Obesity is associated with a higher predisposition to suffer several comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancer and osteoarthritis, and an impaired and shortened quality of life and life expectancy. Also, it should be considered that the economic cost of treating obesity-related comorbidities is very high.
According to the National Health Survey (2011-2012), overweight and obesity affect more than 50 % of the adult population in Spain. However, it should be noted that the data published in this survey every 3 years are self-reported, which reduces the accuracy of the final results.
Recent scientific evidence conducted on representative samples of the population have focused primarily on children, but studies on representative samples of Spanish adults are not as recent.
