It was also observed that BMI was positively correlated with Waist Circumference in the whole sample. The strongest correlation was found in women between 41 and 64 years of age.
Regarding the prevalence of abdominal obesity, significant variations were found depending on the criteria applied for its classification, ranging from 28.1 % when only Waist Circumference was considered, to 58.4 % when the criterion used was Waist to Height Ratio. These figures are very similar to those found in other previous studies conducted among the Spanish population, which also observed the same discrepancy between these two indicators.
The prevalence was higher in women when only the Waist Circumference criterion is considered. Contrarily, the prevalence was higher among men when applying the Waist to Height Ratio criterion.
We must bear in mind that populations differ in their levels of risk associated with a particular Waist Circumference, such that it is impossible to develop globally applicable cutoff points.
Weight, Body Mass Index, Waist Circumference and Waist to Height Ratio were higher in those with abdominal obesity, regardless of the criteria used. It is also noteworthy that 42.1 % of the sample with low Waist Circumference had a high Waist to Height Ratio, and 28.6 % were overweight and 3.2 % were obese.
