Other considerations
BMI is widely used to estimate the prevalence of obesity within a population and the risks associated with it. However, BMI does not account for the wide variation in body fat distribution. Waist Circumference and Waist to Height Ratio are commonly used as indicators of abdominal adiposity.
Although Waist Circumference provides a simple and practical method of identifying those people at increased risk obesity-associated illness, some studies have demonstrated that Waist to Height Ratio is a better predictor of disease or mortality risk than Waist Circumference or BMI.
Waist to Height Ratio may also be a more effective early detection tool than Waist Circumference because it corrects by height and prevents underestimation of the risk in individuals who are taller or shorter than average.
